The independent variable is the factor that researchers manipulate in an experiment. The implication is that these variables are not influenced by any factor and their utilization affects the expected outcomes.

As such, the hypothesis entails what the researcher expects to find in a study (Heavey, 2022). In this case, it is hypothesized that using mobile apps or reminders and not traditional approaches like alarms and written schedules will increase the rate of medication adherence among elderly patients by 30% within three months. The mobile phone applications will increase the medication adherence rate for elderly patients, especially those with poly-pharmacy or different medications that should be taken concurrently at the same time or based on the same routine.
